Paragliding is a sport of breathtaking contrasts. On one hand, it’s a magical realization of humanity’s dream to fly. On the other, it comes with inherent risks that require careful management. If you’re considering a tandem paragliding experience, safety should always be your top priority.

At Paragliding Bawas School, while we don’t offer commercial tandem rides, we are committed to promoting safety in the sport. Through instructional tandem flights, we help our students experience the thrill of flight in the safest way possible. This guide is designed to equip first-time tandem flyers with essential safety tips for a paragliding experience, ensuring their adventure in the sky is both exhilarating and secure.

How to Choose a Safe Tandem Paragliding Operator

1. The Pilot: Experience and Expertise

Your pilot is the most critical factor for a safe flight.

  • Experience: Look for a tandem pilot with at least 100 solo airtime hours, 200+ takeoffs and landings, and 50 tandem flights during training. A certified pilot, preferably rated by APPI or PAI, is the safest choice.

2. Equipment Safety Basics

While your pilot is key, well-maintained equipment is equally important. Ensure the glider has undergone routine inspections for:

  • Porosity: The glider fabric should hold air for a safe duration (above 800 seconds is ideal).

  • Reserve Parachute: Ask if the reserve has been repacked in the past year.

  • General Condition: Look for crisp fabric, bright lines, and no visible tears or repairs.

Pro Tip: Responsible pilots will carry inspection records on their phones—don’t hesitate to ask for them. If not available assume that they are not done. 

3. Acrobatic Tandem Flights: High Thrill, Higher Risk

Acro tandem flights, featuring tricks and stunts, amplify both excitement and risk.

  • High-Risk Maneuvers: ask pilots to not perform acrobatic manoeuvres involving G-force. 

  • Safer Options: Some sharp turns for trill are safe but should be done with ample terrain clearance. (200mts above terrain).

Paragliding is a weather-dependent sport that demands preparation and professionalism. Choosing an experienced operator and understanding the risks will make your flight both safe and unforgettable.

  • Avoid Bargain Flights: Operators charging under Rs. 3000 often cut corners on equipment and safety.

  • Check Credentials: APPI-certified pilots are the best option, followed by PAI. Avoid non certified operators.

  • Be Wary of Reckless Pilots: Some younger or overconfident pilots take unnecessary risks, such as performing low-altitude stunts or flying under the influence of substances.
